Artist Spotlight: Darlene Birdwell

We sat down with Whimsical clay artist Darlene Birdwell to learn about her nature-inspired designs.

Tell us about what you create.

I am a clay artist who enjoys both wheel throwing and hand building. Inspired by nature my work includes natural elements created in clay along with whimsical animals.

Give us a taste of your “artist’s story.” How did you become the artist that you are today?

I’ve been working with clay for 12 years but I am a lifelong maker. My first small business as a child was making and selling potholders door to door! Nowadays inspiration often comes during my walks. Blackberry bushes in the wild inspired a series titled Blackberry Morning, a visit to the beach becomes Costal Carolina and other walks inspired Woodland Forest. A clay medium and the world around me ensure I can continue my journey as an evolving artist.

What is your favorite part about participating in the Whimsical Women art shows?

The atmosphere of show day is unique to Whimsical Women. I feel this is true whether you are a participating artist or attending the event. Whimsical Women has a faithful and growing following because of this. I love the way it connects us and when the day is done everyone looks forward to seeing each other the next time!

Where can folks find more information about your work?

My current work is posted on Instagram @birdwellpottery. I will update shows and where my work can be seen on this site.

Darlene is just one of many amazing women that make up the Whimsical Women family.
